A Bison in Copper

The Buffalo 5 oz Copper Bar is a solid bar of .999 fine copper with a standing American bison across its face, made by Chalcolithic Metals from a design by Jake Haugen. It is a wide, flat bar with rounded corners and a pebbled surface, and it ships new.

The Bull on the Face

The bison stands broadside in the middle of the bar, head turned toward you, horns curving up and a heavy beard hanging below the jaw. Its shaggy mane and forelegs are shown in a darker brown, while the hump and hindquarters are picked out in the lighter copper of the bar, so the animal reads clearly even from across a table. On the left, 5 OZ runs sideways up the edge in tall block letters, and .999 COPPER runs down the right in the same style.

A Back Left Bare

Turn the bar over and there is nothing struck on it. The whole back is the same pebbled texture as the face, with no logo and no lettering. That grainy finish carries over the edges too, which hides the small knocks a copper bar picks up from handling and stacking.

Copper, Not Silver

Copper is an industrial metal, not a precious one, and an ounce costs far less than an ounce of silver. Much of what you pay for a 5 oz copper bar is the making of it rather than the metal inside. Folks pick up bars like this for the design, as a low-cost start to stacking, or to sit beside a silver stack. Bare copper also darkens as it meets the air, so expect the bright color in the photos to mellow toward brown over time.

Is there anything on the back of the bar?

No. The back is plain and textured all over, with no design or lettering.

Why is the surface rough instead of shiny?

The whole bar carries a pebbled texture rather than a polished finish. It gives the bison design contrast and helps hide the marks copper picks up when bars are stacked and handled.

Will the copper change color?

Yes, over time. Bare copper reacts with the air and slowly darkens from a bright orange toward brown. Storing it dry and out of open air slows that down.
