The Buffalo 10 oz Silver Bar is ten troy ounces of .999 fine silver from Highland Mint, struck with a full prairie scene that runs edge to edge across the face. A bison stands in tall grass with rolling hills behind it, and the back is covered in a repeating diagonal legend. It ships new.

The Animal on the Bar

The American bison is the national mammal of the United States and the heaviest land animal in North America, with wild animals weighing up to 1,270 kg. Before the 1870s an estimated 60 million roamed the plains, and by the 1880s the species was nearly extinct. On this bar the bison stands in right-facing profile, its heavy coat and shoulder hump in high relief against a smooth hindquarter, with grass in the foreground and hills on the horizon. The small HM mark at the right of the field is Highland Mint’s.

Struck in Florida

Highland Mint has worked out of Melbourne, Florida since it was established in the early 1980s. It does its own design, sculpting and die making in house, and its presses run up to 1,600 tons. The back is stamped all over with 10 OUNCE · .999 PURE SILVER, set on the diagonal and repeated from corner to corner.

A Plain Bullion Bar Underneath

The art is the reason to pick this bar over a stamped one, but it is still a bullion bar. Our photos show no serial number on either face, and our Specifications tab lists no assay card or certificate. It is sold as bullion, on its silver content.

Highland Mint, a private mint in Melbourne, Florida. Its HM mark sits on the face of the bar beside the bison’s head.

Is this the same design as the Buffalo nickel?

No. The Buffalo nickel and the American Gold Buffalo show James Earle Fraser’s standing bison on a mound. This bar is Highland Mint’s own scene of a bison in prairie grass.

Which way does the bison face?

To the right, in full profile, with its head near the right edge of the bar and the HM mark just beside it.

Is the Buffalo 10 oz bar IRA eligible?

Our Specifications tab lists it as IRA eligible, and at .999 fine it meets the purity standard for silver. It has to be held by your IRA’s custodian, so confirm with yours before you buy.
