Also pictured is the Aztec solar deity, Tonatiuh. He is seen holding a human heart in each of his clawed hands.
Encircling the round are 20 symbols that represent each day of the Aztec month. Four arrows can be seen pointing north, east, south and west.
The reverse image features Tenochtitlan’s last Emperor, Cuauhtémoc.
Executed in 1525 by Spanish conquistadors, Cuauhtémoc is an iconic figure in Mexican history, continually featured in banknotes, paintings, music and other cultural remembrances.
Cuauhtémoc is seen wearing a traditional Aztec headdress and ear ornaments, worn by the society’s most elite.
