The obverse fills the entire field with the Aztec calendar stone. At the center sits a broad face with a protruding tongue, flanked by two clawed hands gripping human hearts. Four rectangular panels frame that center, each holding a separate glyph. Around them runs the ring of twenty day signs, then a band of dots and stepped shapes, and finally an outer ring where two fire serpents meet at the base with their tails and squared scales worked in fine relief. Triangular ray points break up each band. The original monolith was carved from basalt and unearthed in Mexico City in 1790; it now sits in the National Museum of Anthropology.

The reverse turns to a left-facing profile of Cuauhtémoc, the ruler who led Tenochtitlan during its final defense in 1521. His feathered headdress sweeps back in long layered plumes, a large circular ear ornament hangs beside his jaw, and his collar is patterned with scale and cross-hatch detail. His name is stamped in small letters below the bust. ONE TROY OUNCE arcs above and 999 FINE SILVER curves along the bottom, with a border of repeating stepped fret motifs circling the rim.
