The Sun Stone at One Ounce

The Aztec Calendar 1 oz Silver Round puts the Aztec Sun Stone on one troy ounce of .999 fine silver, with a profile of Cuauhtémoc, the last Aztec emperor, on the other side. Golden State Mint strikes it, about 39.3 mm across, and it is the standard size of a design the mint makes from a tenth of an ounce up to ten.

How the Aztec Calendar Counted Time

The stone shows the day signs, but the calendar behind them ran on two cycles at once. One was a 365-day count of the solar year. The other was a 260-day sacred count, in which each day paired a number from 1 to 13 with one of twenty day signs, so 1 Crocodile was followed by 2 Wind, 3 House and on through 13 Reed before the numbers started again. The two cycles lined up only once every 52 years, a span sometimes called the calendar round. The twenty day signs on this round are the same ones that count used.

One Design, Many Sizes

Golden State Mint makes the Aztec Calendar in silver rounds from 1/10 oz to 5 oz, in silver bars of 1, 5 and 10 oz, and in copper. The 1 oz round is the everyday size of the set: big enough at 39.3 mm to show the rings of the stone clearly, small enough to buy one at a time or by the tube.

A Note on White Spots

A few buyers have found white spots, often called milk spots, on .999 silver rounds, including one on this design. Coin World describes them as surface discolorations that have no single predictable cause and that affect silver bullion producers all over the world. They sit on the surface and do not change the ounce of silver in the round. This is a private round, so it carries no denomination and trades on its silver.

It carries the calendar’s day signs, but the Aztec calendar itself was a system of two counts, 365 days and 260 days, that met every 52 years. Wikipedia notes the sun stone is often erroneously called the calendar stone.
