Athens was the birthplace of democracy, but their lasting legacy has as much to do with their religion as their political system. Athena, goddess of wisdom, was considered the patron goddess of the city-state Athens. A tiny owl known as the Athene Noctua came to represent this goddess and her power over the people of Ancient Athens.

Hero Bullion celebrates the incredible history of Athena and the people of Athens with our Athenian Owl 5 oz Hand-Poured Silver Round.

We’ve hand-poured these rounds to replicate the rustic, antique feel of the model coin, bringing a piece of history to your hands. The round pays homage to the original design of the Silver Athenian Owl Tetradrachm, an actual coin used in the city-state over 2,000 years ago. In Ancient Athens, the owl version of the silver tetradrachm coin was issued following the Greek victory over the Persians. It was used for around sixty years to facilitate trade throughout Athens. We’re bringing this coin back to life in the modern era with Hero Bullion’s Athenian Owl 5 oz Hand-Poured Silver Round!

Our craftsmen pour these silver rounds on-site in Texas using the finest .999 pure silver bullion. No two pieces are alike; the unique pouring process we employ guarantees that each round has a unique look that you’ll likely never see again in a hand-poured round.

The obverse of the Athenian Owl is where this round gets its name. Lady Athena’s tiny owl occupies the majority of obverse space, staring forward at the onlooker as it perches. An Ancient Greek abbreviation of the phrase “Of the Athenians” sits to the left of the owl, invoking powerful imagery of one of the world’s most formative civilizations.

I am very happy with the 5oz Athenian Owl. It was priced right, and it’s definitely an interesting piece. The reason I give 4/5 stars is because I realized that it’s a mirror image of the original obverse version. It really doesn’t matter, but it could have been designed the right way. It’s supposed to be the first in the series, I’d be interested in what is planned next, when will that start happening, and what will it be?

Very nice piece. The only issue is the mirror image as the previous comment.
