The Argor-Heraeus Kinebar 1 oz Gold Bar has a shifting, color-changing hologram across its entire reverse, and it is part of the gold itself. It holds one troy ounce of .9999 fine gold, made in Switzerland, and it ships new in its assay card with a matching serial number.

The Kinegram

Argor-Heraeus introduced the Kinebar in 1993. The reverse carries a Kinegram, the same kind of optical security element used on banknotes and passports, with the AH monogram at the center of a lattice of shifting colors. The name comes from the words for moving and drawing. Argor-Heraeus says it is the only refiner to apply a Kinegram to precious metals bars, and that it is minted into the metal rather than stuck on like a sticker. Built into the metal, so it cannot peel off.

The Front and the Card

The front carries the circular ARGOR-HERAEUS SA logo around the interlocking AH monogram, then Switzerland, 1 ounce, Fine Gold and 999,9, with a MELTER ASSAYER mark below and the serial number under it. The bar sits sealed in a transparent blister on a black assay card. The card lists the weight and fineness, and it carries the certified assayer’s signature and the Swiss cross. It prints the same serial number that is stamped on the bar. The serial matches the card, so the two travel together.

A Swiss Refiner From Ticino

Argor-Heraeus began in 1951 as Argor SA, the first precious metals foundry in Ticino, Switzerland, and its name blends the Italian words for silver and gold. What is a Kinegram?

A Kinegram is an optical element that creates a distinctive shifting light effect, made by microscopic engravings that reflect light in different ways. A moving image, and it is difficult to counterfeit.

Is the hologram a sticker?

No. Argor-Heraeus says the Kinegram is integrated into the metal during minting, unlike surface stickers or holographic labels. Part of the gold, and it does not affect the bar’s value or purity.

Does the serial number match the card?

Yes. The serial number stamped on the bar is printed on the black assay card, so you can match the two by eye. Bar and card match, and the card stays with the bar.

How is a Kinebar different from a standard Argor-Heraeus 1 oz bar?

The gold is the same .9999 fine, and the front carries the same roundel and stamps. The difference is the reverse, which holds the Kinegram hologram. The reverse is the difference, and the weight and purity are unchanged.

How big is the bar?

The bar measures about 40 mm by 23 mm and is roughly 2 mm thick. It comes in a blister of about 85 mm by 55 mm. Credit card sized, and easy to store flat.
