The Argor-Heraeus 1 gram Gold Bar is a single gram of 999.9 fine gold, minted by Argor-Heraeus in Mendrisio, Switzerland, and sealed new in the company’s black card. The bar and its certificate carry the same serial number. It weighs 0.03215 troy ounces and measures 15.0 by 8.7 mm.

 

Argento and Oro

The name is a contraction. In 1951 Emilio Weiss and Elvio Zoppi founded ARGOR SA in Ticino, the Italian-speaking south of Switzerland, and took the name from the Italian words for silver and gold, argento and oro. It was the first precious metals foundry in the canton. In 1986 the Heraeus Group joined UBS as an owner and the company became ARGOR-HERAEUS SA, and a new plant opened in Mendrisio two years later. Argor-Heraeus became fully part of Heraeus in 2017.

 

Four Nines Since the 1960s

Argor-Heraeus says it learned to refine gold to 999.9 parts per thousand in the 1960s, when most gold in use was 999.5 or lower. That figure is stamped on this bar as 999,9, the Swiss way of writing it. The company’s brochure states that all its minted gold bars are 999.9 fine and certified by its sworn assayer.

 

Everything on One Face

The front holds every mark: the round Argor-Heraeus seal with its AH monogram, then Switzerland, 1g, Fine Gold and 999,9, a boxed MELTER ASSAYER stamp, and the serial number along the bottom. The back is left plain. The bar sits in a clear window in a black card printed with ARGOR-HERAEUS and “The golden link” under a yellow rule, with the serial printed at the base. The two numbers match, and you can read both without breaking the seal.

 

A Gram Is the Expensive Way to Buy an Ounce

A 1 gram bar carries a far higher premium per ounce than a 1 oz bar. Minting, numbering, carding and sealing cost Argor-Heraeus nearly as much for a gram as for much larger bars, and the cost lands on about three hundredths of an ounce of gold. Buy it for the size, as a first piece of gold or a gift, and buy larger bars when the goal is the most gold for the money.

What does the name Argor-Heraeus mean?

ARGOR joins the Italian words argento and oro, silver and gold, from the company’s founding in Ticino in 1951. Heraeus is the precious metals group that joined in 1986 and has owned the company outright since 2017.

 

Does the serial number on the bar match the card?

Yes. The serial is struck along the bottom of the bar and printed at the base of the card, and the clear window lets you compare them without opening the package.

 

Why is the back of the bar blank?

Argor-Heraeus puts the seal, weight, fineness, hallmark and serial all on the front of this bar. The plain back is the normal design, not a missing stamp.

 

How big is a 1 gram Argor-Heraeus bar?

15.0 by 8.7 mm and half a millimeter thick, by Argor-Heraeus’s own listing. That is small and thin enough that it is safest left in its card.

 

Is it the same gold as a Valcambi 1 gram bar?

Yes, in purity and weight. Both are one gram of 999.9 fine gold from a Swiss refiner, and they are close in size. What differs is the maker’s mark, the design and the card.
