History of the American Silver Eagle Coin

The United States Mint has an impressive history that can attest to the quality and excellence of any of their products.

Founded in the late 18th century, shortly after the achievement of American independence, the Philadelphia branch was originally a division of the State Department. However, it was granted autonomous agency status in 1799.

Today, the Mint boasts four facilities across the country: Philadelphia (1792), San Francisco (1854), Denver (1863) and most recently West Point (1988).

The West Point branch was originally built to serve as a storage unit; however, it now strikes American Eagles in gold, silver and platinum variants.

While the Mint is primarily known for their production of legal coinage, they are also responsible for creating Congressional and commemorative medals, as well as the proper disbursement of gold and silver across the country.

The U.S. Mint began their American Eagle program in 1986, and it continues to be one of the most successful around the world.

Over 531 million Silver Eagles have been produced since the series began nearly four decades ago.

American Silver Eagle Design

The design of the Silver Eagle is easily one of the most recognized around the world.

The obverse features Lady Liberty, facing to the left with her arm outstretched. Her other hand holds a bundle of laurel and oak, a symbol that embodies American pride. Stars and stripes adorn her gown, as she strides into the impending sunrise, visible in the lower left-hand corner.

This patriotic design is based on Alfred A. Weinman’s popular artwork used on the Walking Liberty half dollar, introduced in 1916.

“Liberty”, “In God We Trust” and the year are additionally engraved.

The reverse image was designed by John M. Mercanti, an American sculptor who acted as the U.S. Mint’s Chief Engraver until his retirement in 2010.

A shielded eagle is depicted, holding an olive branch in one talon with arrows clutched in the other. In his beak he holds a banner with the phrase “E Pluribus Unum” or “Out of Many, One” inscribed.

The eagle has long been an American symbol of pride, patriotism and prestige. Thirteen stars are seen overhead, representing the 13 original colonies.

“United States of America”, “1 oz. Fine Silver” and “One Dollar” encircle the circumference.

The diameter is 1.598 inches with reeded edging.

Composition of the American Silver Eagle 1 oz Coin

Very happy with the packaging job they did. Examining the Coins they look excellent. No scratches or milk spots. This is my experience with my order not saying everyone is going to be like this. But I can honestly say if I’m going to buy silver Eagles this is the new spot I’m going to from now on.

Fast Shipping. I received 2014 coins in BU condition with no imperfections. The coins look new (fresh from the mint), or from an unopened roll. Thanks Hero!
