The obverse reproduces Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ Liberty from the 1907 double eagle, a design many collectors rank as the finest ever struck on American coinage. Liberty strides forward with a torch raised in one hand and an olive branch extended in the other, sun rays fanning out behind her and a ring of stars circling the rim. LIBERTY spans the top of the coin, and the date appears near her feet.
The reverse carries Miley Busiek’s family of eagles, the design that defined the series for its first 35 years. A male eagle glides in from the upper left, an olive branch gripped in his talons, while the female shelters their hatchlings in a nest of woven branches below. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA arcs overhead, E PLURIBUS UNUM and IN GOD WE TRUST flank the scene, and 1/10 OZ. FINE GOLD ~ 5 DOLLARS wraps the lower rim. Busiek intended the grouping as a portrait of family strength, a theme that sets the Eagle apart from other bullion designs.
At 16.5 mm across, the coin is slightly smaller than a dime, with a reeded edge and a gross weight of about 0.1091 troy ounces once the copper and silver hardeners are counted; gold content remains a full tenth ounce. Dates are of our choosing based on inventory.
