The obverse side of the coin has Charles E. Barber’s design of Lady Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap which is the equivalent of today’s beanie hat (maybe Liberty was the first hipster?). Above her head is “IN GOD WE TRUST”. To the right and left of her are a total of 13 stars for the 13 colonies. Below her is the year of the coin’s issue ranging from 1892-1916 depending on the stock on hand. 

 

On the reverse side is an eagle with its wings spread and fully open in the heraldic eagle pose. Clutched in its talons are arrows on the right side and an olive branch on its right. This is presumably a nod at times of war and peace. Above it is written “THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”. Below this line and above the eagle’s head are 13 stars for the original colonies. 

 

These coins are rated at Almost Good or Good in condition and are subject to stock on hand. Almost Good means that most of the design will be outlined but the rims will have worn so much that parts of stars and words are gone. Good grade means that the coin will be outlined but there is very little detail. Most of the rim will be intact but the tops of text and sometimes parts of stars may be worn away.
