The front shows Abundantia, the virtue of abundance, standing barefoot at the edge of a vineyard in a simple belted work dress. She reaches up with one hand to a cluster of grapes hanging from the vine while a woven basket of harvested fruit rests against her hip. Her name is worked into the basket’s rim. Behind her, planted rows run down a hillside toward a white mission-style church with a bell tower, and rolling hills close off the horizon. A small rabbit sits in the grass near her feet. California’s viticulture began with mission plantings in the late 1700s and grew into the state’s signature agricultural industry. The line “To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow” runs in script beneath the figure. The 5 denomination sits inside an ornamental rosette at the upper left, with CALIFORNIA, Goldbacks, and Negotiable Instrument across the top. An AURUM serial number runs vertically along the left edge next to the GB seal and the α 2026 series mark.
