About the 2027 Silver Krugerrand
The 2027 1 oz South African Silver Krugerrand is one troy ounce of .999 fine silver, dated 2027 and struck for the bullion market by Rand Refinery, which makes the bullion Krugerrand jointly with the South African Mint. Fifty Years in Gold Before Silver
The South African Mint struck the first gold Krugerrand on 3 July 1967, a one-ounce bullion coin meant to put gold within reach of ordinary buyers. For its 50th anniversary in 2017, the mint issued the Krugerrand in silver for the first time, as limited proof and premium coins. The silver bullion coin followed in 2018. Silver bullion since 2018, so the 2027 coin arrives 60 years after the first gold Krugerrand and in only its tenth year as a silver bullion coin.
The Springbok and the President
The reverse carries the prancing springbok, South Africa’s national animal, designed and engraved by Coert Steynberg and first used on the 1947 five-shilling coin. The obverse shows the bust of Paul Kruger that appeared on South Africa’s gold pound, half pound, R1 and R2 coins from 1952 to 1982. Designs older than the coin, both drawn from earlier South African money. The coin’s name joins Kruger’s to the rand, the country’s currency.
Struck to Demand, at .999
Rand Refinery strikes the silver bullion Krugerrand in unlimited numbers, setting its output by market demand and the daily silver price. No mintage limit, so the 2027 date is the year of issue and nothing rarer. The coin is .999 fine, where the Silver Maple Leaf and Silver Kangaroo are .9999. Every Krugerrand still holds one full troy ounce of silver, and the difference is purity, not weight. Light contact marks from striking and packing are normal on bullion.
