Forty Years of the Gold Britannia
The 2027 1 oz British Gold Britannia is one troy ounce of .9999 fine gold from The Royal Mint, struck Brilliant Uncirculated with a £100 face value. A ’40’ wave privy mark, marking the gold Britannia’s 40th anniversary, from its 1987 introduction to 2027. The Royal Mint pairs the privy with a background texture carrying the anniversary number, and the coin is IRA eligible.
Where Nathan’s Britannia Began
Philip Nathan created this Britannia in 1987 for a new gold bullion coin, and the gold Britannia is where she first appeared: helmeted and striding forward, trident raised for her tie to the sea, a Union Flag shield for protection and an olive branch for peace. The reverse is lettered BRITANNIA, 2027, 1 oz, 999.9 FINE GOLD, with NATHAN at the base. The obverse is Martin Jennings’s portrait of King Charles III, inscribed CHARLES III D G REX F D 100 POUNDS. Nathan’s original, in gold, 40 years on.
An Anniversary Coin That Is Still Bullion
The ’40’ privy and textured background appear only on the 2027 gold Britannia, so this year’s coin is easy to tell apart from any other date. Still one troy ounce, priced on its gold. The privy mark doesn’t make it a limited commemorative, so treat the anniversary as a bonus rather than a reason to pay more. At .9999 fine, the coin is 24-karat and softer than an alloyed gold coin, so handle it by the edge.
Four Security Features
Every Britannia bullion coin carries four security features. A latent image switches between a padlock and a trident as the coin tilts, DECUS ET TUTAMEN micro-text surrounds Britannia, tincture lines mark colours and patterns in the metal, and surface animation makes waves appear to roll behind her as the coin turns. Four checks in the light, no equipment needed. The coins ship in Royal Mint tubes.
