A Full Ounce of Gold in the Coin America Stacks

Every coin contains one full troy ounce of gold, backed by the U.S. government for weight and purity. The 2027 issue features the Type 2 design introduced in 2021 and is eligible for inclusion in a precious metals IRA.
Saint-Gaudens’ Liberty, Norris’s Eagle
The obverse features Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ famous Liberty design, first struck on the $20 Double Eagle in 1907. Liberty strides forward holding a torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other, with rays of sunlight behind her and the U.S. Capitol in the background.
The Mint updated the obverse in 2021 to restore details from Saint-Gaudens’ original vision, including refinements to the Capitol, stars, torch, and sun rays. The result is a closer interpretation of Saint-Gaudens’ original design.
On the reverse, Jennie Norris’s detailed portrait of a bald eagle’s head gives the modern Gold Eagle its distinctive Type 2 appearance. The coin also incorporates the Mint’s variable reeded edge pattern as an additional security feature.
Why It Isn’t .9999 Gold
The American Gold Eagle is struck in 22-karat gold with a fineness of .9167. Silver and copper are added to the alloy to make the coin more resistant to scratches, dents, and everyday handling.
The alloy does not reduce the amount of gold in the coin. Each Gold Eagle still contains a full troy ounce of pure gold, which means the finished coin weighs slightly more than one troy ounce overall.
Buyers looking specifically for .9999 fine gold often compare the Gold Eagle with the American Gold Buffalo. The Gold Eagle instead combines a full ounce of gold with a harder, more durable alloy.
Tubes, Boxes and a Retirement Account
The U.S. Mint packages 1 oz American Gold Eagles in tubes of 20 coins, with larger quantities packed into Mint boxes.
A standard tube contains 20 Gold Eagles. Each coin contains one full troy ounce of gold from a sovereign mint and meets the applicable requirements for inclusion in a precious metals IRA.
