About the 2027 1 Kilo Silver Britannia

The 2027 1 Kilo British Silver Britannia puts a full kilogram of .999 fine silver into a single coin from The Royal Mint, 100 mm across and struck with a £500 face value. The kilo returns to the Britannia silver range for 2027, the year the silver Britannia turns 30, and it carries the ’30’ wave privy mark that sets this date apart.

Back for the Thirtieth Year

The Royal Mint introduced the silver Britannia bullion coin in 1997, ten years after the gold. For 2027 it marks the anniversary with a ’30’ wave privy on the silver coins and a background texture built around the anniversary number, and it brings back the kilo alongside the 1 oz, 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz. Of the four silver sizes, the kilo is the one The Royal Mint packs in a capsule rather than a tube.

Nathan’s Britannia at Full Size

Philip Nathan created this Britannia in 1987, and on a coin nearly four inches wide the detail has room to show. She strides forward in helmet and robes, trident raised in her right hand for her tie to the sea, an olive branch for peace and a Union Flag shield for protection at her left. The legend reads BRITANNIA, 2027, 1 KILO, 999 FINE SILVER, with the ’30’ privy at lower left and NATHAN at the base. The obverse carries Martin Jennings’s portrait of King Charles III, inscribed CHARLES III D G REX F D 500 POUNDS.

Four Security Features, Easier to See

Every Britannia bullion coin carries four security features, and the kilo’s size makes them easy to check by eye. A latent image panel switches between a padlock and a trident as you tilt the coin. The words DECUS ET TUTAMEN, “an ornament and a safeguard”, run in laser-cut micro-text around Britannia. Tincture lines carry colour and pattern into the metal, and surface animation makes waves appear to roll behind her as the coin turns.

One Kilo, One Piece

A kilo is a lot of silver to hold in one place, and that is both the appeal and the limit. Large coins usually carry a lower premium per ounce than the same silver in 1 oz coins, but it sells whole, so you can’t let go of a few ounces at a time. The ’30’ privy marks the anniversary year, not a scarcity, and this is still a bullion coin bought for its silver and its design.

2027 1 Kilo British Silver Britannia FAQ

How much silver is in a kilo Silver Britannia?

One kilogram of .999 fine silver, which works out to 32.15 troy ounces. On a kitchen scale that is about 2.2 pounds, and The Royal Mint lists the coin at 1,005 grams in total.

What does the ’30’ on the coin mean?

It marks 30 years since The Royal Mint introduced the silver Britannia bullion coin in 1997. You’ll find the small ’30’ wave privy at lower left on the reverse, and only 2027 silver Britannias carry it.

Why does it say 500 pounds?

That is the coin’s £500 face value, set by The Royal Mint and struck into the obverse legend. The silver inside is worth far more, so the coin is bought and sold on its metal, never on its face value.

How is the kilo Britannia packaged?

The Royal Mint ships the kilo in a capsule. The smaller silver Britannias come in tubes.

Is the 2027 1 Kilo Silver Britannia IRA eligible?

Yes. At .999 fine silver from The Royal Mint, it qualifies for a precious metals IRA, like the 1 oz Britannia.
