Half a troy ounce of .9999 fine gold from the Perth Mint, the 2027 Year of the Goat issue in Lunar Series III. Wade Robinson’s gold reverse shows one goat on a broken mountain plain with a solitary tree behind, a different design from the silver Goat’s three-animal scene; the obverse is Dan Thorne’s Charles III effigy. Legal tender at 50 dollars, struck Brilliant Uncirculated, 25.6 mm across, a shade wider than a US quarter. Of the four fractional Goats the half ounce sits closest to a full-ounce premium per gram, though a 1 oz coin still gives the most gold per dollar.

Half an Ounce of 2027 Gold

This is a 1/2 troy ounce gold coin, .9999 fine, struck by the Perth Mint for its 2027 Year of the Goat release in Lunar Series III. Half an ounce is 15.55 grams of gold, in a coin 25.6 mm wide, a shade over a quarter. Australia gives it legal tender status at 50 dollars.

The Goat, the Ridge and the Tree

Wade Robinson drew the gold reverse: a single long-haired goat with curved horns on a broken mountain plain, a solitary tree far off and loose rock underfoot. The 2027 silver Goats carry a different reverse, three goats beside a plum blossom tree; the gold coins hold to this one-goat scene at every size. The goat character and GOAT 2027 sit upper right, with the P mintmark opposite. The obverse is Dan Thorne’s King Charles III portrait, lettered CHARLES III, AUSTRALIA, 1/2 oz 9999 Au and 50 DOLLARS.

The Half-Ounce Sits Closest to a Full Coin

Straight talk on cost: half an ounce still runs a higher premium per gram than a 1 oz coin, because the mint’s fixed costs for dies and striking are carried by half the gold. Of the four fractional Goats it is the nearest to a full-ounce price, and a long way below the 1/4, 1/10 and 1/20. If the goal is the most gold per dollar, the 1 oz is still the answer.

Roughly a US Quarter Across

At 25.6 mm and 15.55 grams, the half-ounce Goat has real presence in the hand, close to a US quarter in width and noticeably thick. Keep it capsuled, open it over a soft cloth, and handle it by the edge. One point on authentication: the micro-engraved letter the Perth Mint sets into the 1 oz, 2 oz and 10 oz gold Goats is not on this size. The 1/2 oz is uncapped; the 1 oz gold Goat is the capped one, at 30,000.

Specifications

The coin is half a troy ounce of .9999 fine gold, 25.6 mm across and 2.5 mm thick, with a reeded edge and a 50 dollar Australian face value, struck Brilliant Uncirculated by the Perth Mint for 2027. It has no mintage limit. See the Specifications tab for packaging and the full detail.

Half-Ounce Gold Goat FAQ

Is the half ounce close to a 1 oz on premium?

Closer than any other fractional. The mint’s fixed striking cost rides on half an ounce of gold here rather than a tenth or a twentieth, so the markup per gram is much nearer a full coin, though the 1 oz still edges it.

What is on the reverse, and how does it differ from the silver coin?

A single goat on a mountain plain, by Wade Robinson. The 2027 silver Goat uses a separate design by Natasha Muhl showing three goats and a blossom tree. Same series and year, different art for gold and silver.

Does this size carry the Perth Mint’s security engraving?

No. The micro-engraved letter is applied only to the 1 oz, 2 oz and 10 oz gold Goats. The 1/2 oz and the smaller gold coins go without it.

How many 1/2 oz gold Goats will there be?

No fixed number. The 1/2 oz is made to demand, and the Perth Mint reports the total once the run closes. The only capped gold size is the 1 oz, at 30,000.

Can I hold this in a retirement account?

Yes on the metal: .9999 fine gold from a sovereign mint clears the bar for a precious metals IRA. The premium is lower than the small fractionals but above a 1 oz coin, so confirm the numbers with your custodian.

Set on more than a half ounce? Our Australian gold coins run the Perth lunar series through the 1 oz and up to 10 oz.
