Half an Ounce of Anniversary Gold
The 2027 1/2 oz British Gold Britannia is half a troy ounce of .9999 fine gold from The Royal Mint, struck Brilliant Uncirculated with a £50 face value. 15.60 grams, 27 mm, carrying the same ’40’ wave privy mark as the full ounce. The privy marks 40 years of the gold Britannia, introduced in 1987, and the coin is IRA eligible.
The 1987 Design at Half the Weight
Philip Nathan’s Britannia fills the reverse exactly as on the ounce: helmeted, trident raised, Union Flag shield and olive branch at her side, lettered BRITANNIA, 2027, 1/2 oz, 999.9 FINE GOLD, with NATHAN at the base. The obverse is Martin Jennings’s portrait of King Charles III, inscribed CHARLES III D G REX F D 50 POUNDS. Same art, half the gold, with the ’40’ privy at lower left. The edge is reeded.
What the Half Ounce Costs
Half an ounce costs more per ounce of gold than the 1 oz Britannia, because The Royal Mint’s cost to strike and package a coin barely shrinks with its size. More per ounce, less per coin. The half ounce is the largest of the three fractional Gold Britannias, so it carries the smallest of their premiums. It suits buyers who want a smaller amount of gold to buy or sell at once. For the most gold per dollar, the full ounce is still the answer.
Pure Gold, Four Security Features
At .9999 fine, the coin is 24-karat and marks more easily than an alloyed gold coin, so handle it by the edge. All four features, on the half ounce too. A latent image switches between a padlock and a trident, DECUS ET TUTAMEN micro-text circles Britannia, tincture lines mark the metal, and surface animation makes waves appear to move as the coin turns. The coins ship in Royal Mint tubes.
