Leonidas I was a king of Sparta from the Agiad royal house, which claimed descent from Heracles. When Persia invaded Greece in 480 BC, he led the allied Greek forces in a last stand at the pass of Thermopylae and was killed on the third and final day of the battle. The Greeks lost there but drove the Persians out the following year, and Leonidas became the legend of the 300 Spartans, remembered for the defiant reply “Come and take them.”
