Over the Alps With Elephants
Born in 247 BC, Hannibal led Carthage’s forces against the Roman Republic in the Second Punic War. After attacking Rome’s ally Saguntum in 218 BC, he marched an army over the Alps with North African war elephants and invaded Italy. Victories at the Trebia, Lake Trasimene and Cannae followed, and he held much of southern Italy for 15 years while Rome avoided meeting him head on. His tactics at Cannae left a lasting mark on military strategy.
The General in Gilded Relief
The coin shows Hannibal in high relief, with selective gold gilding picking out key details against the antiqued silver and the name HANNIBAL. The other side sets historical weapons around the Public Seal of Niue, with the legends LEGENDARY WARRIORS, FINE SILVER, 2025, FIVE DOLLARS and 2.oz 999.
