The Series, Since 1990
The series began in 1990 and is the Perth Mint’s longest-running silver coin. The reverse changes annually but the subject never does: the laughing kookaburra, an Australian kingfisher, engraved in fine relief. The obverse carries Dan Thorne’s effigy of King Charles III with the CHARLES III AUSTRALIA legend and the 1 DOLLAR denomination. For the 35th year, an oval privy on the reverse reproduces the original 1990 design.

A Perth Mint coin like this asks more over the silver price than a plain round or a generic government coin. The design is one year only and the 1 oz issue is capped at 500,000 coins, which gives some years a following on the secondary market later, though that is never promised.
