The Perth Mint redesigns the Kangaroo’s reverse every single year, so the 2025 scene belongs only to 2025 coins. Every coin still holds one troy ounce of .9999 fine gold, backed by the Australian government, the same as any other year in the series. Once 2025 closes, the Mint moves on to a new design and this one doesn’t come back.
Two Kangaroos, One Grass Tree
The reverse shows a large red kangaroo lying on its side, basking in the sun, with a second kangaroo standing behind it, ready to leap. A native grass tree, Xanthorrhoea australis, sits in the scene alongside them. The design carries the word KANGAROO, the Perth Mint’s “P” mintmark, the 2025 date, and the coin’s weight and purity, credited to designer Neil Hollis. The obverse carries Dan Thorne’s effigy of King Charles III. The scene is 2025-specific, not reused from another year.
A Mark You Need a Loupe to See
Beyond the design itself, the Mint adds a micro-laser engraved letter to the reverse as an authentication feature, small enough that it only shows up under magnification. Every coin ships new, presented in a protective acrylic capsule straight from the Mint. The mark needs magnification, not visible to the naked eye.
Government-Backed, Down to the Gram
Every coin carries a $100 Australian face value as legal tender, though the gold inside is worth many times that number. At .9999 fine, it also clears the IRS’s minimum for a precious metals IRA by a wide margin. Face value is $100, nowhere close to what the gold is actually worth.
