About the 2025 American Gold Eagle
The 2025 American Gold Eagle marks the 40th year of the series the U.S. Mint launched in 1986, the same Saint-Gaudens Liberty design carried on the 1907 double eagle now struck fresh with this year’s date. Every coin holds one troy ounce of 22-karat gold, backed by a $50 face value from the federal government. It carries the current Type 2 reverse used on every Eagle struck from mid-2021 onward, Jennie Norris’s close-up bald eagle portrait, paired with Saint-Gaudens’s striding Liberty on the obverse.

Why the Gold Eagle Belongs in Your Stack
A 2025 date doesn’t make this coin any less of an Eagle. Every dealer worldwide recognizes the design on sight, and the Mint guarantees the same full troy ounce of gold whether the coin reads 2021 or 2025. It’s also one of the few gold coins named directly in the tax code as IRA eligible, since the American Gold Eagle carries its own statutory listing separate from the general fineness rule other gold has to meet. Does the 2025 Gold Eagle have a mint mark?
No. Bullion-strike Eagles never carry a mint mark, regardless of year. Only the Mint’s separate proof and burnished collector versions carry a W. No mint mark is normal, not a defect.
Is the 2025 American Gold Eagle IRA eligible?
Yes. The American Gold Eagle has its own listing in the tax code as an approved IRA coin, separate from the fineness rule other gold has to clear. It qualifies by name, on top of already meeting the purity standard anyway.
Why does the coin weigh more than exactly one ounce?
Pure gold is soft, so the Mint alloys in copper and silver for durability, about 3% silver and 5.33% copper. That brings the coin’s gross weight to roughly 1.09 troy ounces while the gold content stays a full ounce. Extra weight is alloy, and the gold content never drops below one ounce.
How are American Gold Eagles packaged?
In official US Mint tubes of 20 coins, with 25 tubes making up a 500-coin Mint box. Tubes hold 20 coins, and a full box holds 500.
What condition are these coins in?
Brilliant Uncirculated, as struck by the Mint. Because 22-karat gold is still fairly soft, coins may show light handling marks from the minting process, which is normal for the series and doesn’t affect the gold content. Condition is Brilliant Uncirculated, not a certified grade.
