Inspired by the enduring legacy of American coinage, the American Gold Buffalo was introduced in 2006 as the first 24-karat gold coin produced by the United States Mint. The design draws directly from James Earle Fraser’s 1913 Buffalo Nickel, combining historical imagery with modern minting standards. The 2025 $50 American Gold Buffalo continues this tradition, struck in one ounce of .9999 fine gold. Graded by PCGS as MS70 and carrying the First Day of Issue designation, this coin offers the highest available strike quality and immediate release status. The inclusion of a U.S. flag label further distinguishes it as a premium collectible from one of the most trusted names in American minting.

Key Features

  • 1 troy ounce of .9999 fine (24-karat) gold

  • Obverse features a composite Native American portrait by James Earle Fraser

  • Reverse showcases an American bison modeled after “Black Diamond” of the Central Park Zoo

  • Minted by the United States Mint

  • PCGS MS70 grade with First Day of Issue designation

  • Encapsulated with a U.S. flag label

The obverse of the coin faithfully reproduces the classic portrait of a Native American, designed by Fraser as a tribute to the indigenous tribes of the early 20th century. The profile was based on the features of three separate tribal chiefs, merging their likenesses into one composite figure. Inscriptions on this side include “LIBERTY,” the year “2025,” and the letter “F” for Fraser. The high relief and precise detailing reflect modern minting capabilities while preserving the character of the original design.

The reverse features an image of an American bison standing on a raised mound, a nod to the rustic realism of early U.S. coinage. The model for this bison was “Black Diamond,” a well-known resident of the Central Park Zoo during the time Fraser created the design. Inscriptions include “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and the denomination and gold purity. The wide field and balanced layout allow the design to remain clean while highlighting the coin’s bullion value.

Combining the artistic legacy of American coin design with the purity and precision of modern minting, the 2025 $50 American Gold Buffalo PCGS MS70 First Day of Issue is a strong choice for collectors and investors alike. Its flawless grade, immediate release certification, and timeless design make it a standout piece, whether as part of a precious metals portfolio or a curated numismatic collection.
