The Perth Mint’s Australian Lunar Series III is one of the most followed annual silver programs in the world, and the 2025 Year of the Snake is its sixth release. Struck in .9999 fine silver, the 1/2 oz size offers an accessible entry point into the series without sacrificing the design quality the Lunar program is known for. This is also the first Lunar coin to carry the effigy of King Charles III, making the 2025 release a notable issue within the series’ history.

Key Features:

  • Purity and weight: 1/2 troy oz of .9999 fine silver
  • Metal: Silver
  • Obverse: Right-facing portrait of King Charles III by Dan Thorne; inscribed Charles III, Australia, 1/2oz 9999 Ag, 50 Cents
  • Reverse: A coiled snake resting on the ground beneath hanging willow leaves; inscribed with the Chinese character for Snake, Snake 2025, and the Perth Mint P mintmark

The reverse centers on a tightly coiled snake occupying most of the field, its scales rendered in precise layered detail from head to tail. The body is thick and realistically proportioned, with the head raised slightly and alert. Drooping willow branches frame the upper portion of the design, their fine leaf clusters adding depth and a naturalistic canopy above the animal. The Chinese character for Snake and the inscription Snake 2025 appear at the top, with the P mintmark positioned to the left of center. A micro-engraved security feature is incorporated into the reverse design — invisible to the naked eye but detectable under magnification — a counterfeit deterrent standard across the Lunar Series III.

The obverse carries the Dan Thorne portrait of King Charles III in sharp right-facing relief, the first time this effigy has appeared on the Australian Lunar series. The inscriptions confirm the weight, fineness, and face value of 50 cents — legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965.

Each coin arrives in brilliant uncirculated condition in an individual protective capsule. Production of the 1/2 oz size closes at the end of 2025, when the Perth Mint will declare the final official mintage.
