The 2024 230th Anniversary Flowing Hair Silver Medal commemorates a genuine landmark: the 230th anniversary of America’s first dollar coin, struck by the United States Mint on October 15, 1794. Released on the exact anniversary date in 2024, this medal brings Robert Scot’s original Flowing Hair design into the modern era through precision re-sculpting and current Mint striking technology. With a limited mintage of 75,000 medals — all of which sold out from the U.S. Mint — it has already proven its demand in the collector market.

Key Features:

  • Purity & Weight: 1 troy oz of .999 fine silver
  • Metal: Silver
  • Obverse: Right-facing bust of Liberty with flowing hair, inscribed “LIBERTY” and “2024,” surrounded by 15 stars representing the states that had ratified the Constitution by 1794
  • Reverse: Eagle with spread wings perched within a laurel wreath, inscribed “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”
  • Finish: Uncirculated
  • Mintage: Limited to 75,000 medals, struck at the Philadelphia Mint

The obverse faithfully reproduces the portrait of Liberty as it appeared on the original 1794 Flowing Hair dollar — one of the rarest and most coveted coins in American numismatic history. Liberty faces right in sharp profile, her hair cascading in long, individually defined waves behind her. The expression is calm and classical, the face and neck cleanly modeled. Fifteen six-pointed stars ring the portrait, one for each state that had joined the Union by the time the original coin was struck. “LIBERTY” arcs across the top rim and “2024” appears at the base, flanked by stars. The obverse was re-sculpted by United States Mint Medallic Artist John P. McGraw. The reverse reproduces the eagle from the original 1794 design — a spread-wing bird perched atop a tied laurel branch, wings raised, head turned left. The feathers across the breast and wings are individually struck, and the olive branch sprays curve symmetrically on either side. The inscription “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” arcs along the rim. This early American eagle predates the later heraldic eagle design and carries a distinctly archaic character well-suited to the period it commemorates. The reverse was re-sculpted by Medallic Artist Eric David Custer.

The medal is encapsulated and presented in a matte black clamshell case bearing the United States Mint seal, enclosed in a black outer sleeve with a silver embossed Flowing Hair Liberty image on the front. A Certificate of Authenticity with matching imagery is included. Note that 1,794 medals in the overall production run were randomly distributed with a special “230” privy mark, and 230 of those came with a COA hand-signed by U.S. Mint Director Ventris C. Gibson — neither variant is distinguishable from standard packaging until opened.

An already sold-out U.S. Mint release with a firm 75,000-medal cap, the 2024 Flowing Hair Silver Medal is one of the most historically grounded commemorative silver pieces the Mint has produced in years. Add it to your cart today.
