In Norse mythology, it was believed that when a warrior died in combat he was escorted to Valhalla, a paradise for warriors by Valkyries. Some believe these were Odin’s daughters, beautiful warrior princesses. The Germania Mint has decided to honor these women by making beautiful coins starting with Hildegard on the first coin and Ostara is featured on the second coin. 

 

On the obverse of the coin is Ostara, the goddess of victory over death. She is shown here standing in a field with a large deer standing next to her. She is shown here clad in her traditional white gown and wearing a floral wreath on her head. Around her neck is a necklace with the Berkanan rune, the rune for regeneration, female fertility, and beauty. In the background are more deer. At the top of this side is ‘OSTARA’ written in a runic font. This Valhalla edition adds a black finish and accents elements of the design with a yellow gold electroplating that makes the image really pop. Her floral wreath was given a blue coloring. 

 

The reverse side has a highly detailed shield. Around the edge are many runes. The shield looks like wood banded with iron. The design is so detailed you can see the grain of the wood. On the shield is a stag and the Germania Mint’s logo. At the top of the shield is written “GERMANIA 2023 1 oz Ag 999.9” Below the stag and mint logo is ‘5 mark’. The wooden part of the shield has a black finish while the edge and the stag and logo are accented in yellow gold electroplating.
