The Britannia Silver Coin is crafted by the Royal Mint, a trusted mint for over 1100 years. The Royal Mint has come to be known as a mint that produces beautiful coins to commemorate key historical figures and events. The Britannia Silver Coin is a stunning testament to the quality and attention to detail that has made the mint so popular. Since 1987, customers have been awed by Phillip Nathan’s depiction of Britain’s revered Britannia.
What makes these coins so special is the beautiful art of two of the best coin designers, Jody Clark and Phillip Nathan. Their designs are striking in a silver bullion coin.
The obverse features King Charles III as designed by Martin Jennings. Jennings is most known for his beautiful busts of famous literary figures like George Orwell and Charles Dickens. In this design we see King Charles looking to the left. Engraved around his portrait are the initials “D.G. REX F.D. which are abbreviations for the Latin phrase which means “By God’s Grace, King. Defender of the Faith’. To the right of his portrait is “2 Pounds” reminding us that this is legal tender backed by the British Government.
The featured design for this coin is Phillip Nathan’s Britannian design. Britannia is the embodiment of Britain and is supposed to represent the strength and resilience of Britain. In Nathan’s portrayal, she is wearing a toga and a brush helmet on her head. In her right hand she is wielding a trident and in her right hand is an olive branch and a shield with a Union flag on it. Arched above the image is ‘Britannia 2023 1 oz 999 ‘FINE SILVER’. Below is ‘NATHAN’ as an artist’s signature.
Introduced in the 2021 coin, the 2023 Britannia Silver Coin has four anti-counterfeiting measures integrated into the design. As you look at the reverse side of the coin, you will see a smaller trident than the one Britannia is holding. When you turn the coin a little you will see the trident turn into a padlock. Additionally, the waves in the background are another security feature. When you move the coin, the waves look like they are moving. The design of the flag on Britannia’s shield is another anti-counterfeit measure. The flag has tincture lines that highlight the Union flag. Mico-text around the border of the coin makes for another security feature. Here you will see “Decus et Tutamen ” which is Latin for “an ornament and a safeguard” seemingly referring to the fact that the micro-text is a decoration and a security measure. All of these features combine to defend the value of the coin.
