The Smilodon, commonly known as the sabre-tooth tiger, is the subject of the 2023 2 oz Canadian Silver Smilodon Coin. This coin is part of the Royal Canadian Mint’s Ice Age Series and is made with 2 troy oz .9999 fine silver.

Key features:

  • Made of 2 troy oz of .9999 fine silver
  • Minted  by the Royal Canadian Mint
  • Ten dollars face value backed by the Canadian Government.
  • Obverse side has the image of Queen Elizabeth II as designed by Susanna Blunt
  • The reverse side has the image a smilodon jumping toward the viewer with its mouth open showing its large teeth

The obverse of the coin has a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Over the years the portrait of the queen has shown her at different times in her life. This portrait features her at age 79. The artwork is by Canadian artist Susanna Blunt. The queen is shown here facing right, which is traditional in this series and wearing a pearl necklace and pearl earrings. Showing the queen without her crown gives her a more casual appearance as if she is waiting to entertain guests for tea. The pearls and her confident look still gives her a regal air. On her right shoulder we see Blunt’s initials, ‘SB’. To the left of the queen is written ‘Elizabeth II’.To her right is ‘D.G. REGINA’, which is short for the Latin phrase, ‘Dei Gratia Regina’ which means ‘by the grace of God, Queen’.  At the bottom of this side is ‘10 DOLLARS’.

The reverse side of the coin has the image of a smilodon leaping toward the viewer with its mouth open showing the ‘sabre-teeth’ that has made this tiger famous. Above the image is ‘CANADA 2023’  Below the image is ‘FINE SILVER 2 OZ ARGENT PUR’. At the shoulder of the smilodon is a small maple leaf that acts as an anti-counterfeiting measure.

The Smilodon, also known as the saber-toothed tiger, was a prehistoric carnivorous mammal that lived 2.5 million to 10,000 years ago. It was one of the largest predatory cats of the last 2 million years and had distinctive long, curved saber-like upper canines that gave it its name. The species of Smilodon were native to North and South America and were some of the top predators of their time. Although they were similar in size to modern big cats, such as lions and tigers, Smilodon were built differently and had a unique jaw structure that allowed them to overpower and kill large prey with their formidable teeth.
