On the obverse is Jody Clark’s now famous design of Queen Elizabeth II. The queen is regal and resplendent in her detailed crown and dangle earrings. Stamped around her portrait are the initials “D.G” and “REG” which are initials for the Latin phrase “Dei Gratia Regina” which means By God’s Grace, Queen. Also, stamped is “100 Pounds”.

 

The reverse features Phillip Nathan’s classic Britannia design. This detailed design depicts Britannia wearing a flowing toga and a crested helmet. In her right hand, she is holding a trident. With her left hand, she is holding a shield with the Union Jack on it symbolizing Britain’s strength. Also in her left hand is an olive branch representing peace. 

 

Integrated into Nathan’s beautiful design are four security features. In the lower left corner of the design, under Britannia’s gown, is another trident. When you move the coin, you can see the trident change into a padlock. Another security detail can be seen when you look at the waves in the background and move it side to side. The waves appear to be moving. Looking closely at Britannia’s shield one can see tincture lines highlighting the Union flag. Around the border of the waves, is an almost tongue in cheek “Decus et Tutamen” written in micro-text which is Latin for “An ornament and a safeguard”. All of these features make it harder for counterfeiters and defends the value of this coin.
