The Mexican Silver Libertad carries one of the longest track records in the bullion world, issued annually by La Casa de Moneda de México since 1982 — making it one of the oldest continuously running silver bullion programs anywhere. The 2 oz size, added to the series in 1996, remains the least produced weight in the lineup each year, giving it a collector following that goes well beyond its silver content alone.
Key Features:
- Purity and weight: 2 troy oz of .999 fine silver
- Metal: Silver
- Obverse: Winged Victory standing in three-quarter profile against the twin Mexican volcanoes; inscribed 2 Onzas Plata Pura, 2022, Ley .999, and the OM mint mark
- Reverse: The current Mexican national coat of arms at center, surrounded by ten historical versions of the shield; inscribed Estados Unidos Mexicanos
The obverse centers on Winged Victory — the figure modeled after the statue crowning the Monument to Independence in Mexico City. She stands facing left in three-quarter profile, one arm extended forward, her wings spread wide behind her. The landscape below her feet shows a broad valley floor stretching toward the twin volcanic peaks of Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl, rendered in low relief across the background. The OM mint mark of La Casa de Moneda de México appears to the right of the figure, and the inscriptions arc cleanly along the upper rim confirming the weight, purity, and year.
The reverse is structured around the current national coat of arms — the golden eagle perched on a prickly pear cactus with a serpent in its beak, wreathed in laurel and oak branches. Arranged in a ring around this central shield are ten smaller renditions of the coat of arms as it appeared across different periods of Mexican history, giving the reverse a numismatic depth that sets the Libertad apart from most bullion issues. The inscription Estados Unidos Mexicanos arcs across the upper field.
Each coin is struck in brilliant uncirculated condition and ships in an individual protective flip. The 2 oz denomination has never reached high annual production figures, and output for this size consistently trails the 1 oz issue by a wide margin.
