The obverse side of the 2022 American Gold Eagle has the Augustus Saint-Gaudens designed image of Liberty. This design was first seen in 1907 on the $20 Gold Double Eagle and was used until 1933. Liberty is shown here facing the viewer and walking toward them. She carries a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. At her feet is Washington D.C. with the sun bursting behind her. Surrounding Liberty are 50 stars. Above her head is ‘LIBERTY’. At the bottom of the coin is ‘2022’.

The reverse side of the 2022 1 oz Gold Eagle Coin has Jennie Norris’ new design released half-way through 2021. This design features an American Bald Eagle’s head facing to the left. There is a lot of detail here and the viewer can see the feathers which are finer near the top of the head and change to larger feathers at the neck. Norris captures the intensity that is characteristic in the eyes of an eagle. Above the eagle’s head is ‘UNITED STATES OF AMERICA’. Just below this text in a smaller font is the Latin phrase ‘E PLURIBUS UNUM’ which means “From many, one.” Under this phrase is ‘IN GOD WE TRUST’. At the bottom of the coin is ‘50 DOLLARS’ and ‘1 oz FINE GOLD’.
