While there are similar critters found in the folklore of First Nations peoples, the werewolf legend as we know it was brought to Canadian shores by the country’s French immigrants. In Canada, yarns about the menacing man-beasts date back to the era of New France and lasted until at least 1767, when the Gazette du Québec warned readers of a ravenous werewolf disguised as a beggar. 

 

The coin’s reverse depicts a savage werewolf crouching on its hind legs, reaching forward with one powerful claw, as a dense forest looms behind with a full moon above. The brutish beast was rendered in terrifying detail by renowned First Nations artist Gerald Gloade. The obverse of this silver coin features the striking profile of Queen Elizabeth II.
