Polar Bears are beautiful but fierce which makes it kind of a great icon for Canada. Canada is a beautiful country but parts of it have fiercely cold conditions. The polar bear thrives in these conditions.  The Canadian Mint honors this majestic animal on the 2018 1/10 oz  CanadianGold  Polar Bear Coin. This coin comes in Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) condition.

Key features:

  • Made of 1/10 Troy ounce of .9999 fine gold
  • Minted by the Royal Canadian Mint
  • Brilliant Uncirculated (BU)  condition
  • Face value $5 backed by the Canadian Government
  • Obverse side features the image of Queen Elizabeth II
  • The reverse side has the picture of a polar bear

The obverse of the coin has a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Over the years the portrait of the queen has shown her at different times in her life. This portrait features her at age 79. The artwork is by Canadian artist Susanna Blunt. The queen is shown here facing right, which is traditional in this series and wearing a pearl necklace and pearl earrings. Showing the queen without her crown gives her a more casual appearance as if she is waiting to entertain guests for tea. The pearls and her confident look, still give her a regal air. On her right shoulder, we see Blunt’s initials, ‘SB’. Above the queen is written ‘Elizabeth II’. Below her portrait is ‘5 Dollars 2018’.

The reverse of this coin has the image of a polar bear walking to the left. He is walking on a piece of ice. Below him is 9999 for the purity of the silver. Above the bear is ‘CANADA’. At the bottom of this side is ‘FINE GOLD 1/10 oz OR PUR’.

There is no question that the Royal Canadian Mint makes great coins. One only has to look at the intricate design of this Canadian Maple Silver Polar Bear coin and they can see what this mint is capable of producing. The mint started in 1908 and immediately started minting coins for the Canadian government. In 1911 they opened their own refinery.  This refinery got better and better over the years and by 1969 they were making .9999 fine gold bars. In 1982 they became the first refinery to produce a .9999 bullion coin. In 2007 the Canadian Royal Mint produced the largest coin in the world, a 100kg bullion gold coin which was 99.999% fine gold and worth $1 million.
