The 2017 American Liberty marked 225 years of the United States Mint and broke with two centuries of coinage precedent in how it portrayed Liberty. Each coin holds 1 troy oz of .9999 fine gold, carries a $100 face value, and was struck in high relief with a proof finish at West Point. The issue sold out at the Mint and now trades on the secondary market only.

Key Features:

  • Purity and Weight: 1 troy oz of .9999 fine gold
  • Metal Type: Gold
  • Obverse Design: Liberty in profile wearing a crown of stars, dated 1792–2017
  • Reverse Design: Bald eagle in flight with weight, purity, and denomination

Justin Kunz designed the obverse, depicting Liberty as an African American woman in a classical gown, the first time the figure had been rendered that way on US coinage. She faces left with her hair braided and gathered into a coiled knot, crowned by a row of five-pointed stars set into the braid. LIBERTY arcs across the top, 1792 and 2017 flank the portrait, and IN GOD WE TRUST curves along the base. The high relief lifts the portrait well off the field, so the cheekbone, jawline, and star points cast real shadow.

Chris Costello’s reverse shows a bald eagle in flight, wings fully extended and head turned forward, seen from below. Every flight feather is separately defined. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and E PLURIBUS UNUM arc across the top, 1 OZ. .9999 FINE GOLD is stacked in the left field, and 100 DOLLARS runs along the bottom, with the W mintmark above it.

Coins ship in the US Mint’s black lacquered presentation case with a certificate of authenticity and the accompanying illustrated booklet on the design and its history. Handle by the edges; proof surfaces mark easily.
