A Grizzly Three Inches Across
The 2017 Canadian Grizzly Bear holds ten troy ounces of .9999 fine silver in a single coin from the Royal Canadian Mint. At 76.25 mm across, about three inches, it gives the bear room that a 1 oz coin never could. It is a 2017-dated coin, sold today on the secondary market.
The Grizzly on the Rock
The reverse shows a grizzly standing on a broken rock ledge, head thrown back and jaws open in a roar, its fur cut in long strokes across the shoulders and the hump of its back. CANADA runs across the top in widely spaced letters. Beside the bear sit the date 2017 and a small maple leaf mark, and the artist’s initials PL are tucked by the rock. A band of fine radial lines fills the outer ring, carrying 9999 FINE SILVER 10 OZ ARGENT PUR 9999.
Queen Elizabeth II on the Other Side
The obverse carries Susanna Blunt’s portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, facing right, with ELIZABETH II and D G REGINA around her. The coin was struck five years before King Charles III came to the throne, so it carries the Queen’s portrait, not the King’s.
Struck Before MintShield
In February 2018 the Royal Canadian Mint announced MintShield, a surface treatment that reduces the white “milk spots” that can form on .9999 silver. This coin is dated 2017, a year before that treatment arrived. Coins from this year can show light milk spotting or handling marks from years on the secondary market. The spots sit on the surface and do not change the silver content.
