A 2009 Libertad at Five Times the Weight

The 2009 5 oz Mexican Silver Libertad holds 5 troy ounces of .999 fine silver on a coin 65 mm across and 5.4 mm thick. It was struck at the Mexico City mint and is listed as brilliant uncirculated. A Seven-Ton Statue, 65 mm Wide

Winged Victory on this coin is modeled on the statue that tops the Angel of Independence in Mexico City. The real figure is 6.7 meters tall, weighs seven tons, and stands on a column 36 meters high. She holds a laurel wreath out over the city, the same gesture she makes on the coin. Here she rises from her column with wings spread, and the volcanoes Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl fill the horizon behind her.

 

Reading the Victory Side

5 ONZAS PLATA PURA curves around the upper left, telling you the weight and that the silver is pure. The right side reads 2009 LEY .999, with the Mo mint mark of Mexico City tucked just inside. There is no denomination anywhere on the coin. Libertads state their silver content instead of a peso value.

 

A Ring of Eagles

Mexico’s current coat of arms fills the center of the other side: the eagle on a prickly pear cactus, devouring a serpent, with ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS above. Around it, ten earlier versions of the national emblem march around the rim. On a 65 mm coin, the small eagles are large enough to tell apart at a glance, so this side rewards a close look more than the same design does on smaller Libertads.
