The Perth Mint’s Australian Kookaburra series, first introduced in 1990, is admired worldwide for combining government-backed silver bullion with annually changing wildlife designs. The 2002 2 oz Australian Silver Kookaburra Coin highlights this tradition with a striking image of a kookaburra soaring across a map of Australia. Struck in .999 fine silver and issued as legal tender with a $2 denomination, the coin has a declared mintage of just 15,696 coins, making it one of the scarcer 2 oz releases in the program.

Key Features

  • 2 troy ounces of .999 fine silver

  • Struck by the Perth Mint

  • Obverse: Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Queen Elizabeth II

  • Reverse: Kookaburra in flight over Australia map

  • Legal tender with $2 denomination

  • Declared mintage: 15,696 coins

  • Brilliant Uncirculated condition

The obverse displays Ian Rank-Broadley’s effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara. Around the portrait are inscriptions reading “ELIZABETH II,” “AUSTRALIA,” and “2 DOLLARS,” confirming both origin and face value.

The reverse, designed by Jovan Radanovich, depicts a kookaburra with wings spread wide as it flies across a map of Australia. Surrounding inscriptions include “AUSTRALIAN KOOKABURRA 2002,” “2 OZ. 999 SILVER,” and the Perth Mint’s traditional “P” mint mark. The bold composition highlights both the bird’s natural strength and the coin’s Australian identity.

With its .999 fine silver purity, engaging design, and limited declared mintage of 15,696 coins, the 2002 2 oz Silver Kookaburra stands as a prized addition for both bullion investors and numismatic collectors.
