$20 Saint Gaudens Double Eagle Gold Coin NGC MS63

Augustus Saint-Gaudens designed the Double Eagle at Theodore Roosevelt’s personal request, and collectors have called it the most beautiful American coin ever struck since it entered production in 1907. Each piece carries 0.9675 troy ounces of pure gold in a 90% fine alloy. This one is certified MS63 by NGC, a choice uncirculated grade with full mint luster and only minor contact marks, which is a strong condition for a coin that stopped being made in 1933.

The obverse shows Liberty advancing forward from a rocky outcrop, a torch raised in her right hand and an olive branch extended in her left. Her gown streams behind her, and sunburst rays fill the field at her feet. LIBERTY arcs across the top rim, the Capitol dome appears in miniature at the lower left, and stars ring the border, one for each state at the time of issue. The date sits at the lower right.

On the reverse, a bald eagle flies left with wings extended, passing above a sun whose rays radiate upward across the lower field. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA curves along the top and TWENTY DOLLARS runs below. Issues from 1908 forward also carry IN GOD WE TRUST above the sun.

The coin measures 34 mm across with a lettered edge reading E PLURIBUS UNUM between raised stars. NGC seals it in a tamper-evident holder with a label showing the grade and certification number. Dates and mint marks are dealer’s choice and cannot be requested. Most examples in this grade come from the higher-mintage years of the 1920s.
