The $20 Liberty Double Eagle carries nearly a full ounce of gold and close to six decades of American minting history in a single coin. It was the largest gold denomination the U.S. Mint struck for everyday commerce. Produced for circulation between 1850 and 1907, it remains one of the most recognized classic U.S. gold pieces among investors building a hard-asset position and collectors drawn to nineteenth-century Americana. This example has been certified Mint State 62 by NGC.
- Purity and Weight: .900 fine gold, 33.436 grams total, containing 0.9675 troy oz of pure gold
- Metal Type: Gold with a copper alloy for added durability
- Obverse Design: Liberty in a coronet, ringed by thirteen stars, with the date below
- Reverse Design: Heraldic eagle bearing a shield, clutching arrows and an olive branch
The obverse presents the head of Liberty facing left, her hair drawn back beneath a coronet inscribed LIBERTY. Thirteen stars encircle the portrait for the original colonies, and the year of issue sits at the base. James B. Longacre, then Chief Engraver at the United States Mint, cut the design, and it defined the denomination across the whole series.
The reverse centers on a heraldic eagle with a shield across its breast, arrows and an olive branch held in its talons to balance readiness with peace. A ring of stars and rays crowns the bird, and the value appears below. The exact wording of the denomination and the presence of the national motto shift by era, since the coin was produced in three design types over its run.
Each coin measures 34 mm across and arrives sealed in a tamper-evident NGC holder with a certified grading label. The MS62 designation marks an uncirculated coin that shows some contact marks under close inspection while keeping full original detail and mint luster. As a semi-numismatic piece, it trades on both its gold content and its condition premium. Dates are our choice and vary by availability.
A near-ounce of .900 fine gold in certified Mint State condition, the Liberty Double Eagle pairs real bullion weight with genuine collector history. Add one to your holdings today.
