The $20 Liberty Double Eagle was born of the California Gold Rush, authorized in 1849 when torrents of new gold demanded a larger coin than America had ever struck. Minted until 1907, each random-year example contains nearly a full ounce of gold, and Brilliant Uncirculated survivors pair that bullion weight with more than a century of American history at a modest premium over melt.

Key Features:

  • Contains 0.9675 troy ounces of gold in a 90% gold, 10% copper alloy
  • Historic U.S. legal tender with a $20 face value, struck 1849–1907
  • Obverse: James B. Longacre’s Lady Liberty in profile, crowned with a coronet
  • Reverse: a heraldic eagle with shield, framed by a glory of rays and stars

The obverse presents James B. Longacre’s left-facing Liberty, her hair gathered and curled at the neck, wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY. Thirteen six-pointed stars circle the rim for the original colonies, and the date sits below the bust. The design held its post for nearly six decades, making it one of the longest-serving portraits in U.S. coinage.

The reverse carries a heraldic eagle with wings spread, a striped Union shield across its breast, gripping scrolls that read E PLURIBUS UNUM. Above the eagle’s head, IN GOD WE TRUST sits ringed by thirteen stars inside a halo of sun rays. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA wraps the top rim and TWENTY DOLLARS the bottom, the denomination spelled in full. Coins of this later type date from 1877 onward, when the motto and full spelling were in place.

Each coin measures 34 mm across and weighs 33.44 grams gross, with dates and mint marks of our choosing based on inventory. BU examples retain full original luster with sharp detail and no circulation wear, a condition made scarcer by the 1933 gold recall that melted millions of Double Eagles.

Pre-1933 gold in uncirculated condition offers history no modern bullion coin can match. Order your $20 Liberty Double Eagle from Hero Bullion today and hold the coin that carried America’s Gold Rush fortune.
