Ten Dollars That Spent Time in Circulation
These $10 Liberty Head gold eagles passed through hands as real money before they reached a collection, and they show it only lightly. Extremely Fine, or XF, means complete details with minor wear on the high points of the design. Each coin was struck with 0.48375 troy ounces of gold in a 90% gold alloy.
Reading the Wear
On this design, wear shows first where the metal stands highest: Liberty’s hair and the eagle’s breast feathers. At XF those areas look softened, while LIBERTY on the coronet, the star points and the lettering stay clearly readable. NGC splits the grade in two: XF 40 shows minor wear on most of the high points, and XF 45 on only some.
The Motto After the War
Christian Gobrecht’s Liberty Head eagle ran from 1838 to 1907 with one major change. In 1866, after the Civil War, the Mint added IN GOD WE TRUST on a ribbon above the eagle, and that motto stayed for the rest of the series. The coin in our photos is dated 1901, with the motto across the top of the reverse.
