These $10 Liberty Head Gold Eagles are genuine pre-1933 U.S. gold coins that were cleaned or polished at some point in their history. Each holds 0.48375 troy ounces of pure gold in a 90% fine alloy, the same as any other Liberty eagle. The cleaning lowers what collectors will pay for them, which brings the price closer to the gold inside.

What Cleaning Leaves Behind

A cleaned coin has been rubbed, polished or treated to make it brighter, and that leaves marks. Expect fine hairline scratches across the fields, a shine that looks harsher than original mint luster, and in some cases a polished, glossy surface. Details like Liberty’s hair and the eagle’s feathers may also be worn. The gold is unaffected, and each coin still weighs 16.718 grams at .900 fine.

Gobrecht’s Coronet Liberty

Christian Gobrecht designed the Liberty Head obverse when the ten dollar eagle returned in 1838, and it stayed in use until 1907. Liberty faces left in a coronet inscribed LIBERTY, her hair in a beaded bun, with stars around the border and the date below. The reverse shows a heraldic eagle with a shield on its breast, an olive branch and arrows, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA above and TEN D. below. Coins dated 1866 and later carry IN GOD WE TRUST on a ribbon over the eagle.
