A President and a Currency in One Name
The name Krugerrand joins two things. Paul Kruger is the bearded president on the front of the coin, and the rand is South Africa’s currency, which takes its own name from the Witwatersrand gold fields. Two languages on every coin: the legend under the springbok reads FYNSILWER 1 OZ FINE SILVER, Afrikaans first and English second, and the country appears as both SUID-AFRIKA and SOUTH AFRICA.
A Springbok in Silver
The reverse shows the springbok, South Africa’s national animal, in full stride across low scrub with KRUGERRAND arched above it, the same design Coert Steynberg created for South African coinage and the gold Krugerrand has carried since 1967. The front carries the bearded bust of Paul Kruger, president of the old South African Republic, with SUID-AFRIKA and SOUTH AFRICA on either side. The designs never change, so a random-year coin differs from any other only in its date.
