Platinum, the Little Silver

The name comes from the Spanish platina, a diminutive of plata, silver, after the metal’s silvery white color. Antonio de Ulloa’s 1748 report on a new metal from Colombia was what began to bring it to scientists’ attention. Today South Africa leads production of the platinum group metals. Platinum is a key part of catalytic converters, and it also goes into jewelry, laboratory equipment and electrical contacts.

Because the bars have changed hands before, we cannot promise every card is untouched or every bar looks fresh from the refiner, but the platinum is unchanged and the card states what the bar holds.

 

The refiner is not something you can request. The design, the card style and whether the bar carries a serial number all depend on which bar fills your order.

Why is the condition listed as used?

These bars come from the secondary market, meaning they have been owned before they reach us. The listing does not promise new-from-the-refiner packaging, and the assay card shows what the bar holds.

 

Is this platinum bar IRA eligible?

Our Specifications tab lists it as IRA eligible. Federal rules allow platinum bullion in an IRA at .9995 fine or better, held by the IRA’s trustee rather than at home. Custodians set their own lists of accepted products, so confirm with yours before you buy.

 

Why are no dimensions listed?

Because the refiner varies, so does the size and shape of the bar. Every bar weighs one troy ounce, but the dimensions vary from one refiner to the next.

 

Does the bar have a serial number?

That depends on the refiner, so we cannot promise one on every bar. If your bar carries one, it should match the number on the card.
