Platinum is scarcer than gold, and sovereign platinum bullion is scarcer still. The Perth Mint launched its Platinum Platypus in 2011, striking each coin in one troy ounce of .9995 fine platinum with legal tender backing from the Australian government. Annual production runs well below what the major gold and silver programs put out, which gives these coins a collector following on top of their metal value.
Key Features:
- Purity and Weight: 1 troy ounce of .9995 fine platinum (99.95% pure)
- Metal Type: Investment-grade platinum, struck by the Perth Mint
- Obverse Design: Effigy of the reigning monarch with the 100 DOLLARS denomination
- Reverse Design: Platypus swimming underwater among reeds
The reverse is the reason this series stands out. A duck-billed platypus is shown mid-swim, viewed from above and slightly behind, its broad tail and webbed feet spread as it moves through the water. Fine incuse lines pick out the fur across the body, and the animal’s dark bill and eye are rendered in polished contrast against the matte finish. Ribbon-like water plants trail up the right side of the field, and bubbles scatter across the surface to suggest depth. AUSTRALIAN PLATYPUS arcs across the top rim, 1 oz 9995 PLATINUM runs along the bottom, and the Perth Mint’s “P” mintmark sits in the left field.
The obverse carries the standard Perth Mint bullion format: a right-facing profile of the reigning monarch, the country name, the issue year, and the AUD $100 face value. Queen Elizabeth II appears on coins from earlier years in the series.
Brilliant Uncirculated strikes come off the dies with full detail and bright, unhandled surfaces. Coins are protected in individual capsules. Because this listing covers multiple years of the series, the issue year cannot be selected, and the exact monarch effigy depends on the year you receive.
Platinum gives you a metal with heavy industrial demand and a supply base concentrated in only a few countries. Paired with one of the more distinctive designs in modern bullion, this coin earns its place in a diversified holding. Order yours today and we will ship it insured in discreet packaging.

Australian Mint products are highest quality. My friend calls their coins ‘shiny stuff”. Platinum price is down and flat, at some point the bull might get out of the pen? If u have some spare fiat, then establishing a long platinum position may be a good speculative bet.
