Which Refiners Turn Up

Bars come from a rotating mix. PAMP Suisse, Heraeus, Valcambi and IGR are among the names you may see, and Argor-Heraeus and Metalor can appear too. Each bar carries its refiner’s mark, the weight and the fineness. A PAMP bar reads SUISSE, 1 g and FINE GOLD 999.9, a Heraeus bar reads Feingold 999.9, a Valcambi bar shows its rhombus emblem over fine gold 999,9, and an IGR bar reads 1 g FINE GOLD 999.9. Many also carry a serial number. Fineness reads 999.9, whichever refiner it is.

Sealed or Loose

Some bars ship still sealed in their assay card. Others have been taken out of their packaging and show fingerprints, light scratches or handling marks on the face. The refiner, the packaging and the condition cannot be requested, and a bar may arrive with or without its assay card. The marks are on the surface only, and the weight and fineness are stamped into the gold. The gold is unchanged, whatever the bar looks like.

A Gram Costs More Per Ounce

A gram of gold costs more per ounce than a one ounce bar does. The refiner spends nearly as much stamping a small bar as a large one, and that cost gets spread across very little gold. You pay a higher premium per ounce on every gram bar, from any refiner. Nobody buys a gram to get the cheapest gold in the room, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. What this size gives you is a small, simple entry.

Each bar holds one gram, or 0.03215 troy ounces, of .9999 fine gold and measures roughly 15 mm by 8 mm. Can I choose the refiner?

No. The bar depends on what we have in stock, and refiner, packaging and condition cannot be requested on this listing. No refiner requests, which is what keeps the listing simple.

Will it come with an assay card?

Maybe. Some bars ship sealed in their assay card and others have been removed from it, and a bar may arrive with or without one. Card or no card, we cannot say before it ships.

Does the bar have a serial number?

Often, but it is not promised. Many refiners stamp a serial number on their gram bars, and some do not. A serial is common, not guaranteed on this listing.

How small is a 1 gram bar?

It is roughly 15 mm by 8 mm and very thin, smaller than a fingernail. Handle it carefully, and keep it protected when it is not on the table.

Is the gold the same whichever refiner I get?

The bars in our photo are all stamped 999.9, which is .9999 fine, and each weighs one gram. Same fineness, different names, so the choice of refiner changes the look and not the gold.
