The obverse side of this coin has a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. This portrait is by Canadian artist Susanna Blunt and features the queen at age 79. Facing to the right, the queen is without her crown which is a departure from how she is usually depicted on coins. She is wearing a simple dress, a pearl necklace, and pearl earrings. Despite the more casual look, the queen looks regal and confident. To the left of her is ‘Elizabeth II. Below her portrait is ‘8 Dollars’. The initials, ‘SB’ for the artist, are seen on the queen’s right shoulder. To the right of the queen is ‘D.G. REGINA’ which is from the Latin phrase meaning ‘By the Grace of God, Queen’.
On the reverse side of the coin is a picture of three Canadian Maple Leaves. The Canadian Maple Leaf is an icon for Canada and is seen all over Canada including their flag. This picture has the three leaves joined together at the stem. At the top left of the coin is ‘CANADA’. At the top right is the date of issue. At the bottom of the coin is ‘FINE SILVER 1 ½ OZ ARGENT PUR’.
