The American Platinum Eagle was the first platinum bullion coin issued by the United States Mint, launched in 1997 to give investors a government-backed option in a metal long overshadowed by gold and silver. This 2003-dated 1/2 oz example carries the series’ original Statue of Liberty obverse, struck in .9995 fine platinum and backed as legal tender by the U.S. government.

Key Features:

  • Purity: .9995 fine platinum
  • Weight: 1/2 troy oz
  • Metal: Platinum
  • Face value: $50 (U.S. legal tender)
  • Obverse design: Frontal portrait of the Statue of Liberty’s head and crown, with radiating sun rays, inscribed “LIBERTY,” the year of issue, and “IN GOD WE TRUST”
  • Reverse design: A soaring eagle in flight over a rising sun, inscribed “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “.9995 PLATINUM 1/2 OZ.,” and “$50”

The obverse presents a close, forward-facing view of the Statue of Liberty’s head, her crown’s spiked points clearly defined and her facial features rendered with strong detail. Behind her, sun rays radiate outward across the upper field, framing the portrait. LIBERTY arcs across the top of the coin, the 2003 date appears to the right of her face, and IN GOD WE TRUST is inscribed just below the date.

The reverse depicts an eagle in full flight, wings spread wide and angled downward, soaring above a rising sun whose rays extend across the lower left field. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is inscribed in two lines across the top, while .9995 PLATINUM 1/2 OZ. is stated to the right of the eagle, confirming purity and weight directly on the coin face. The $50 face value is stamped along the lower rim.

This obverse design, used during the series’ early years, has become closely associated with the Platinum Eagle’s debut on the U.S. bullion market. Platinum’s relative scarcity compared to gold and silver, combined with full government backing, makes this coin a solid diversification option for investors looking beyond traditional precious metals.
