The 1/2 oz American Gold Eagle splits the difference between the flagship one-ounce coin and the smaller fractionals, holding meaningful gold weight while keeping the price of entry manageable. Struck by the U.S. Mint since 1986, each random-year coin contains a half troy ounce of gold in the series’ durable 22-karat standard, carries a $25 face value as official U.S. legal tender, and arrives in Brilliant Uncirculated condition.

Key Features:

  • Contains 1/2 troy ounce of gold in a 22-karat (91.67%) alloy
  • Official U.S. legal tender with a $25 face value
  • Obverse: Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ full-length Lady Liberty
  • Reverse: nesting eagles (Type 1) or an eagle head portrait (Type 2), depending on year

The obverse reproduces Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ Liberty from the 1907 double eagle, widely ranked as the finest design ever placed on American coinage. Liberty strides forward with a lit torch raised in her right hand and an olive branch in her left, sun rays fanning out behind her and the Capitol dome set small at the lower left. LIBERTY arcs across the top inside a ring of stars, with the date near her feet.

The reverse depends on the year of issue. Coins struck from 1986 through mid-2021 carry Miley Busiek’s Type 1 design, with a male eagle gliding toward a nest where the female shelters her hatchlings, framed by E PLURIBUS UNUM and IN GOD WE TRUST. Later coins bear Jennie Norris’s Type 2 portrait, a close-up bald eagle head struck in fine feather detail. Both versions state 1/2 OZ. FINE GOLD and 25 DOLLARS along the rim.

Each coin measures 27 mm across with a reeded edge. Copper and silver hardeners bring gross weight to about 0.5455 troy ounces while gold content stays at a full half ounce. Dates and reverse types are of our choosing based on inventory.

The half-ounce Eagle suits buyers who want real gold weight with more flexibility than a full ounce locks in. Order your 1/2 oz American Gold Eagle from Hero Bullion today and add mid-sized, government-backed gold to your stack.
