Two Reverse Designs, Same Coin

The obverse carries Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ Liberty striding forward with a torch, adapted from his 1907 double eagle. The reverse depends on when your coin was struck. Coins from 1986 through mid-2021 carry Miley Busiek’s family of eagles nesting together, and coins from 2021 onward carry Jennie Norris’s close-up eagle portrait, introduced for the series’ 35th anniversary. Both read 1/2 OZ. FINE GOLD and 25 DOLLARS along the lower rim. Which reverse you get depends on the year in stock, not a choice you make at checkout.

 

A Smaller Premium Than the Smaller Sizes

Every fractional Eagle costs more per ounce than the full ounce does, since the Mint’s cost to strike a coin doesn’t shrink as fast as the coin does. That premium is real here too, but it lands lighter than on the 1/4 oz or 1/10 oz coins, since the same fixed minting cost spreads across five times the gold of a tenth-ounce piece. The premium is smaller here, closer to full-ounce pricing than the smallest fractionals get.

It’s a smaller effect here than on the quarter or tenth ounce, since there’s more gold in this coin to absorb it. The cost spreads thinner, just not as thin as on the smaller fractionals.

 

Is the 1/2 oz American Gold Eagle IRA eligible?

Yes. At 22-karat purity, it clears the IRS’s fineness floor for a precious metals IRA, the same as any other size of Gold Eagle. Eligibility applies by size, not just to the larger coins.

 

What condition do these coins arrive in?

Brilliant Uncirculated, as struck by the Mint. Because the alloy is still fairly soft, coins may show light handling marks from minting and shipping, which is normal for the series and doesn’t affect the gold content. Condition is Brilliant Uncirculated, not a certified grade.
