The Krugerrand was the first modern bullion coin and remains one of the most widely recognized gold coins in the world. Dealers in nearly every market know it on sight, which keeps spreads tight when you buy and when you sell. The tenth-ounce size brings that liquidity down to a price point most buyers can reach without hesitation, making it a practical choice for gradual accumulation and for gifting.

Key Features:

  • Purity and Weight: 1/10 troy ounce of fine gold, struck in 22 karat (.9167) gold alloy
  • Metal: Gold alloyed with copper, giving the coin its distinctive warm reddish tone and hard-wearing surface
  • Obverse: Portrait of Paul Kruger with SUID-AFRIKA and SOUTH AFRICA around the rim
  • Reverse: A springbok antelope in mid-stride with weight and purity declarations

The obverse carries a left-facing bust of Paul Kruger, president of the South African Republic in the late nineteenth century. His full beard is struck in fine separated lines, his hair swept back from a high forehead, and his coat collar and lapel resolve clearly against the field. The country name appears in both languages along the rim, SUID-AFRIKA on the left and SOUTH AFRICA on the right, separated by small dots. A beaded border rings the design.

The reverse presents the springbok, South Africa’s national animal, captured mid-stride with all four legs extended and its horns curving back over its shoulders. The ground beneath it is textured with grass and low scrub. 1/10 KRUGERRAND arcs across the top, and FYNGOUD 1/10 OZ FINE GOLD wraps the lower rim, again in both Afrikaans and English.

Coins are struck to brilliant uncirculated standard and ship as random year from available inventory. The Krugerrand carries no face value; its worth is tied entirely to its gold content. The 22 karat alloy makes the coin noticeably more resistant to scratching than a 24 karat piece.

Received my piece today. A lovely 1981 coin. This is my first time dealing with Hero Bullion but it won’t be the last. Already placed another order for a Sovereign.

Always wanted a “Krug” and I was very happy to receive a early 1980’s coin that I didn’t have to break the bank and buy a whole ounce to afford. Thanks hero bullion I will be back for more soon!
