The Krugerrand was created to put gold in the hands of the man on the street, and the 1/10 oz coin takes that idea furthest. When the South African Mint added the fractional sizes in 1980, it did so to help smaller buyers own gold at an affordable price. A tenth ounce of gold, in the same 22 karat coin that at one point made up 90% of the world’s gold coin market. This listing ships random years.
Two Designs Older Than the Coin
Both faces were borrowed from earlier South African coins. The prancing springbok on the reverse, engraved by Coert Steynberg, first appeared on the 1947 five shilling coin struck for the British royal family’s visit to South Africa. The bust of President Paul Kruger on the obverse is the same one carried on South Africa’s £1 and ½ pound gold coins, and later its R1 and R2 gold coins, from 1952 to 1982. Designs older than the Krugerrand, shrunk down to 16.5 mm on the tenth ounce.
Any Year, Same Coin
The tenth ounce has been made since 1980, and the bullion design has not changed in that time, so a random-year coin looks the same as a new one apart from the date. The date is our choice, drawn from what we have in stock, and a multi-coin order may include more than one year.
Legal Tender With No Number on It
Krugerrands are legal tender in South Africa, but they carry no denomination. In place of one, the coin states its gold content, and its value follows the daily gold price. No denomination, by design, on every size of Krugerrand.
The Price of a Tenth
A tenth of an ounce costs more per ounce than a full ounce does. The mint spends nearly as much striking a small coin as a large one, and that cost gets spread across less gold. Higher premium per ounce, on this coin and on every fractional, from any mint. What you get for it is a coin small enough to buy one at a time, give as a gift, or sell without breaking up anything bigger.

Why was the 1/10 oz Krugerrand made?
The South African Mint added the 1/2, 1/4 and 1/10 oz Krugerrands in 1980 to help smaller buyers acquire gold at an affordable price. The tenth is the smallest of the bullion sizes.
Which year will I receive?
We choose the year from available stock. The design has been the same since the tenth ounce was introduced, so only the date differs.
Is there a denomination on the 1/10 oz Krugerrand?
No. Krugerrands are legal tender in South Africa, but no denomination appears on the coin. Its value is its gold content at the day’s gold price.
Why does a 22 karat coin hold a full tenth ounce of gold?
The gold is alloyed with copper, which makes the coin harder. The Mint adds the copper on top of the gold rather than in place of it, so the coin weighs more than a tenth of an ounce and still contains a full tenth of fine gold.
Is the 1/10 oz Krugerrand IRA eligible?
No. The IRS allows 22 karat gold in an IRA only for the American Gold Eagle, so the Krugerrand does not qualify at any size.
