Four Nines From Australia’s Official Bullion Mint

The Perth Mint 1 oz Australian Kangaroo Silver Bar holds one troy ounce of .9999 fine silver, struck by the Perth Mint in Western Australia. The front carries the mint’s swan mark, the back a field of leaping kangaroos, and the fineness stamp hides a small security feature of its own. It is sold new.

The Swan and the Kangaroos

The front is struck with the Perth Mint’s swan logo inside a ring reading THE PERTH MINT and AUSTRALIA, set on a field of fine circles that spread out to the edges of the bar. A panel near the bottom reads 9999, FINE SILVER and 1 OUNCE. The back is covered in kangaroo shapes, set in diagonal rows and incused into the surface, the same motif the Perth Mint uses on its gold minted bars.

A Tiny P in the Last Nine

Look closely at the 9999 on the front. The Perth Mint places a tiny letter P inside the last nine as an authentication feature, to make the bar much harder to counterfeit. Check the last nine with a loupe if you want to see it. The mint still recommends buying only from trusted sources, which is good advice for any bar.

From a Government-Owned Mint

The Perth Mint opened in 1899 and is wholly owned by the Government of Western Australia, which has held it since 1970. It is Australia’s official bullion mint, and its swan mark is accredited by the London Bullion Market Association. A sovereign mint’s bar, at a one ounce size most stackers can add a few at a time.

Is the Perth Mint government owned?

Yes. The Perth Mint is wholly owned by the Government of Western Australia, which took it over in 1970. Before that it was run as a branch of the Royal Mint. Owned by Western Australia since 1970.

What is the small P on the bar?

It is a tiny P mintmark set inside the last nine of the 9999 stamp. The Perth Mint added it as an anti-counterfeiting feature. A hidden mintmark, small enough that you may need a loupe to see it.

How are these bars packaged?

The Perth Mint packs them in acrylic tubes of 20, each sealed with the mint’s tamper-evident seal, with the bars stacked loose inside. Tubes of 20, so buying in twenties is the simplest way to store them.

Is this a coin?

No. It is a minted bar, a separate product from the Perth Mint’s Silver Kangaroo coin, and it carries no denomination. A bar, not a coin, priced on its silver.

Is the Perth Mint Kangaroo silver bar IRA eligible?

Yes. At .9999 fine, it is well above the fineness minimum for silver in a precious metals IRA. IRA eligible, held through your custodian.
